Plein Air Challenges

I was fortunate to have been juried into two plein air competitions almost back to back this Spring.   April 19 - 25th I participated in Paint The Town 2026 in Marble Falls and May 4-9  Outdoor Painters Society's Plein Air Southwest.  Several pieces have now gone to new homes in both areas.

Plein air painting can be challenging at times.  Marble Falls, Texas had rain and gray skies several days causing a schedule change  to enable the artists to have a little sunshine while painting at the amazing and beautiful Burnam Ranch, a 5th generation owned working cattle ranch.

A similar weather challenge in Galveston with gray, moody skies and the occasional rain drops a few days but not complaining.  The beaches, sand dunes, and beautiful historic homes all made up for it.   The best part however, is catching up with old friends and meeting many new amazing artists.

June will be a road trip to Santa Fe to visit friends and of course paint the incredible New Mexico vistas.  Will then make the short drive to Albuquerque for the final IAPs (International Association of Pastel Societies) conference.  I'm looking forward to several demos from some of my favorite pastel artists and shopping at the Candy Store where all the major vendors will be displaying all things Pastel!  This could be dangerous $$$.

I hope everyone is enjoying a beautiful Spring and early Summer wherever you are.  Now....  Go Paint!!!

Mother Nature

February has its normal varied weather here in the Hill Country.  One day freezing followed by temps in the 80's!   Cold days make for great studio work and the warmer days inspire me to go out and paint plein air.

It's been a busy and productive month.  I traveled to San Antonio to paint the Missions with the Outdoor Painters Society and to Galveston to scout out and get familiar with the landscape in preparation for an upcoming competition in May.  Always fun to paint with my fellow artist friends.  Next month will be in Lake Charles, LA again with Outdoor Painters Society.

I also have 2 pieces in the Austin Pastel Society Member Show held at the beautiful A05 studio in Austin.

Honored to have been selected to participate in Paint The Town - Marble Falls, TX  and Plein Air Southwest held in Galveston, TX May 4-9, 2026.  Lot's to do to prepare supplies, travel plans and painting, painting, painting!!!

Putting 2025 to bed and ramping up for an exciting 2026

I squeezed in some plein air painting on the final days of 2025 and used the last few days after Christmas to reflect, dream and plan for 2026.  2025 was a year laced with several art trips, monthly paint outs, competitions and just a few more aches and pains.  I'm learning that my body just can't do what my mind thinks it can.

Always looking for better ways to do what I do, I gifted myself a Take It easel.  It's larger but so much easier to set up and take down and carry.  Hand crafted it is a work of art itself.  Downsizing some items and ramping up others as well as a studio reorganization, I'm motivated and excited to get this year started.

I am honored and very excited to have been accepted into the  2026 Paint The Town in Marble Falls, Texas April 19-25, 2026.  This will be my first juried competition of this caliber.   Hopefully this will be the first of many more.

I'm looking forward to monthly paint outs with my art buddies and the always exciting road trips we love to take!

Let's Go Paint!

Fall In the Hill Country

Fall has finally arrived in the Texas Hill Country with long awaited cooler weather.  Mornings are lovely yet still warming up during the day.

Its been a busy October and November.  I participated in the annual Paint Kerrville competition selling one of my pieces.  It was bitter sweet as this was such a special place and I was very happy with the outcome.  It was purchased by the ranch owners where it was painted.  So honored to have my painting hanging in their home.

Following a week in Kerrville, my painting buddy Brenda Cascio of BrendaCascio.com and I traveled to San Angelo, Texas to participate in the En Plein Air Texas Artist Revival where we painted shoulder to shoulder with some of the best artists in the country who shared their tips and tricks as well as personal feedback and critique.  Amazing experience!

I have two peices in the Central Texas Pastel Society's annual show and sale at the Georgetown Public Library in Georgetown, Texas.  The Drawn To Morning Light exhibit will be on display November 14 - January 3, 2026.    UPDATE!!!   "Beneath the Rising Sun" won Honorable Mention!

I also have a piece in the Georgetown Art Center's Small Works show on exhibition November 21 - January 3, 2026.  Artist reception and awards November 22 4:00 -6:00 with awards announced at 5pm.

Leaving early Monday morning (Nov 17th) headed to Big Bend National Park for the annual Outdoor Painters Society (OPS) paint out.  I participated in this event last year and it does not disappoint.  Some of the most rugged and dangerous yet beautiful and serene landscape in all of Texas, hands down.  Traveling with 3 of my best painting buddies I'm looking forward to painting, socializing and star gazing for a week.  Watch for updates to my website with new pieces I know I'll come back with.

Be safe

Stay warm

and most of all.....

enjoy every moment

My First Blog

With my new website comes the opportunity to journal my art adventures via this Blog.  Welcome!

Summer in Texas is still going strong and hot Hades as my dad would say.   I did see a hint of autumn in the colors of the trees last weekend while pleinair painting my newest piece "Flag over still waters".  We've got a lot more heat I'm afraid before the weather starts to cool off in this part of the country.

I was very excited to have won an Honorable Mention with my pastel "Standing Strong" in the Outdoor Painters Society 2025 Members Show and Sale in Corsicana, Texas recently. The exhibit at The Warehouse in Corsicana continues until August 29th. Painted on a small quiet side street in beautiful Liberty Hill, Texas, the old house and gardens are still standing strong.  This small Texas town is experiencing much growth.  I hope these old historic homes survive the new regeneration.  Liberty Hill is a favorite place to paint.

With Fall comes several outdoor painting opportunities in the Texas Hill Country.  Along with local Pleinair groups monthly paint outs, I will be participating again in the annual Paint Kerrville.    Taking place on ranches and surrounding communities, beautiful vineyards, farms and ranches are waiting to share their charm with over 50 artists who will paint for 4 days, followed by judging and awards.  I was humbled last year to have won Best in Show, especially being my first event of this kind.  I look forward to seeing old and new friends at this very special event.
